The second half deals with the developing and printing process. The book details those processes equally well.

This book is considered by some to be the fourth book in the The Ansel Adams Photography Series. In 1983, Ansel Adams picked 40 of his most memorable and diverse black and white photographs as examples of his work. For each one he wrote a engaging narrative that described the circumstances about deciding to photograph the subject, how he prepared for the photograph, how he selected the composition, tricky light and shadow conditions he encountered. Included are the technical details of how the image was captured, covering equipment, film speeds, settings, filters, lenses, and the technical details of printing the image. Included also are reminiscences of the places and his companions involved, the surprises he experienced, and the special challenges that occurred.
